About this Craft

Mata ni Pachedi is a sacred textile art form from Gujarat, India, practised exclusively by the Vaghari community for centuries. Traditionally created as a temple cloth (pachedi) for the Mother Goddess, each piece is hand-drawn and hand-painted on cotton fabric using natural dyes derived from plants and minerals — predominantly deep red, black, and ochre.

The art follows a timeless visual grammar: a central deity surrounded by attendants, animals, musicians, and intricate floral motifs, all rendered in bold outlines with meticulous hand-painted detail. This large-format masterpiece (120" × 84") depicts Shakat Mata (Shakti Ma) at the centre, flanked by twelve divine emanations, Lord Ganesha, dancers, and iconic motifs including the sun, bull, winged horse, goat, priest, and musicians — set against a richly detailed background of flowers and creepers.

Painted by master artisans of the Chitara family — hereditary custodians of this living heritage — using only natural colours, this is a rare collector's piece. No two paintings are identical. Recognised by the Government of India as a GI-tagged craft, Mata ni Pachedi is a UNESCO-acknowledged intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
