Mata ni Pachedi: Sacred Cloth Paintings from Gujarat

Mata ni Pachedi is a devotional cloth painting from Gujarat, hand-drawn by artists of the Chitara community who have kept this craft going for generations. The name means "behind the Mother Goddess." Families who were once kept out of temples painted the goddess onto cloth and carried their own shrine with them, and that tradition still shapes every piece you see here.

Each painting in this collection is made by hand on cotton fabric using natural, locally sourced pigments. The outlines are drawn with a bamboo pen, and the deep red, black and mustard tones come from materials like tamarind seed, iron and pomegranate rather than synthetic dyes. Because the work is done by hand, no two pieces come out exactly alike. Most compositions place the Mother Goddess at the centre — Vishat Maa, Meldi Maa, Amba and others — surrounded by her riders, guardians, sacred animals and the Tree of Life.

At Prosperitymirra, authenticity comes first. Every Mata ni Pachedi in our collection is sourced directly from renowned master artisans, including Dilip Chitara and Padma Shri Bhanubhai Chitara, preserving a living tradition passed down through generations. All of our artworks are ready to ship, and we are happy to arrange a detailed video viewing so you can appreciate the craftsmanship, intricate hand-painted details and true colours before making your decision. Frequently Asked Questions

What does Mata ni Pachedi mean?

It translates from Gujarati as "behind the Mother Goddess." The cloth was traditionally hung behind the goddess in a shrine, which turned the fabric itself into a portable temple for families who could not visit one.

Are Mata ni Pachedi paintings made with natural colours?

Yes. Our artists work on cotton cloth with natural, locally sourced pigments. The reds, blacks and yellows come from materials like tamarind seed, iron and turmeric, applied with a bamboo pen or an indigenous tool and filled in by hand.

How should I care for a Mata ni Pachedi painting?

To preserve your Mata ni Pachedi, display it away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive moisture. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, and consider framing it behind glass to safeguard both the handwoven fabric and its natural pigments, ensuring its beauty can be enjoyed for generations.
